The Krag Rifle
by LtCol Williams S. Brophy, USAR, Ret

The author was born and raised in the Fox River Vally of nothern Illinois. A retired Army Lieutenant Colonel with service in both the Ordnance Corps and the Infantry. At the time of his death, he was the senior technical manager of the Marlin Firearms Company.

Brophy's experience has more than equipped him to prepare this, the first book on the Krag Rifle. As a lifetime collector of martial arms, as well as a shooter and marksman, the author understands tan appreciates the mechanics and functions on US military longarms.

His experience is both civilian and military, and his knowledge derives from close association with many who used the Krag rifle in the service, as well as from years of reviewing the technical records of the Springfield Armory where the Krag rifle was made.

In addition, his many years of competition in the national matches at Camp Perry, Ohio, have provided him with a considerable background in th technical workings of the bolt action rifle.

As a hunter, his experience ranges from going after rabbit and squirrel as a kid in Illinois to hunting Kodiak bear while living in Alaska. In fact, as of this date, Brophy's brown bear is fourth in the Boone and Crockett record book standings.

Brophy's greatest hobby is the research and development of little known facts about arms made at the Springfield Armory. The variations and ordnance testing procedures for the development of the Krag rifle could have been detailed only after lengthy and patient research of many documents and firearms at the armory and in private collections.

From the back cover of the Krag Rifle

Brophy's interest in publicizing new information about about firearms was also apparent in his work editing The Marlin Collector for the Marlin Firearms Collectors Association.

The Krag Rifle is Brophy's second book. In 1978 he published L.C. Smith Shotguns (also published by the GUN ROOM PRESS), which opened a new field for collectors by providing new information, charts and tables about one of the most popular bu little understood shotguns.

Although a military rifle--made for the United States at the Springfield Armory, and for other nations, in Scandinavia--the Krag rifles and carbines are among the most popular hunting arms ever employed; the .30-.40 cartridge is still popular today. Many thousands of Krags are still used as sporting versions of the military models. Yet, until now, very little information was in print concerning when these rifles were made, issued or used.

The The Krag Rifle fills the gaps. It provides information necessary to understand the Krag, how it came into being, and what are its collector variations.

The list price for The Krag Rifle is $135.00.
